OK, I have to admit that this is one of my favorite photos of myself. Taken by Pat Pemberton in front of the small daily newspaper we worked at in Spencer, Indiana sometime in 1996. I was back from Europe for a few months and staying at my mother's in Bloomington. I bought the bike to make the 30-mile, one-way commute to the paper everyday more enjoyable – hey, something has to make living in Indiana fun. The ride in the morning, when I was still half asleep and a cold fog covered the low-lying farms, was miserable. I dropped the bike twice. But the ride home was exhilarating.
